Stepan Kolesnikov (1879-1955).

Crowd on Snow. Beginning 1920s. Oil on cardboard. 29,5 by 39cm. Private collection.

An artist from Odessa, David Burliuk's friend, Stepan Kolesnikov, escaped Bolshevik's terror through Mongolia and settled in Yugoslavia. There, he became the rector of the Art Academy in Belgrade. He is told to be the favorite artist of Josip Broz Tito, then President of Yugoslavia. This piece was kept in a private collection in Munich and used to be anonymous for a long time. It got there in the 1920s together with other works displayed at a famous exhibition Erste Russische Ausstellung in Berlin in 1922. Kolesnikov was also exhibited at this exhibition. The typical Kolesnikov's manner and the fact of his participation in the above-mentioned exhibition give grounds to attribute this landscape to S.Kolesnikov.

Attributed by Prof.D.Gorbachev.
