There is a false signature on the picture saying: “A. Exter. 1908”. On the back of the picture, there is an authentic inscription “Belonging of Exter, Kiev, Gymnasicheskaya”. The picture was actually owned by Exter but she was not the author of it. The picture was painted by a Kyivite, Exter’s pupil, Ekaterina Vasilieva, whose style is close to the style of her teacher, Exter. The Boats was displayed on an exhibition referred to as Ring (Kyiv, 1914) and was reproduced by the Muzy magazine. The signature of Exter appeared later, when her works began to be put up to auctions and were sold for big money. |
